Sources
Information about this photograph provided by Greg Kennelly, amateur PGE historian, based the following sources:
- A document entitled "Equipment Record, March 1, 1949", attributed to Eric P. Stathers, which was obtained by the late William H. Hewlett, and now in Kennelly's private collection, indicates that pile driver 6040 was built in 1919 by Bay City Foundry (likely located in Bay City, Michigan) and purchased second-hand by the PGE in 1945. The pile driver tender was originally the tender for the 6-wheel switch engine, #3, built by Davenport Locomotive Works in February 1914.
- Photographs held in Kennelly's private collection show the locomotive, sans tender, in Squamish in 1949 before being sent to Lillooet to serve as the stationary boiler for the Lillooet roundhouse.
