Archdeacon W. H. Collison fonds

The Archdeacon W.H. Collison fonds consists of textual materials, maps, published materials and photographs all documenting Collison’s life and work with North Coastal First Nations communities in British Columbia. Types of records found within this fonds include manuscripts, sermon notes, correspondence, oral history summaries, monographs, cartographic items, photographs and postcards. The Collison fonds also includes some records created by his children and grandchildren as well as a family tree created in 1986. The Collison fonds has been divided into four series.

Prince George Railway & Forestry Museum Collection

The Prince George Railway & Forestry Museum Society Collection consists primarily of textual, photographic, and cartographic records related to the regional developments of the railway industry in Northern BC. A predominant portion of the collection is made up of material from the Canadian National Railway; other railways represented include the Pacific Great Eastern Railway, the British Columbia Railway (BC Rail), the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, the Grand Trunk Railway, the Intercolonial Railway, and the Okanagan Express. Significant geographical areas covered include Prince George, the Peace River Region, Terrace, Bulkley Valley, Hazelton and Prince Rupert.

The forestry industry is represented in the collection with operational and financial records from Fyfe Lake Sawmill Ltd., which operated southwest of Prince George in the 1950s.

The collection has been organized into series according to creator, each of which also has been arranged to subseries, file and item level, where applicable. This collection consists of eight series, as follows:

Miscellaneous railway history material

This series consists of material created by various societies, companies, railways, unions and government branches for the use and instruction of railway companies and employees. Includes publications, time tables, training materials, union materials, forms, maps and plans related to rail operations in North and South America, but predominately related to Canadian railway operations. Also comprises material created by several American and Canadian railways and transportation companies.

The Grand Trunk Railway and Grand Trunk Pacific Railway series consists of administrative records, correspondence between railways, and ephemera. Also consists of maps and technical drawings depicting Grand Trunk Railway and Grand Trunk Pacific Railway rail lines and structures.

David Davies Railway Collection

The David Davies Railway Collection encompasses all facets of railway history specifically in the province of British Columbia and the Yukon territory. The collection consists of research material accumulated over the course of more than fifty years, and includes monographs, periodicals, articles, clippings, railway timetables, photographs, maps and plans, and excerpts. Material covers public, tourist, and private (industrial) railways, including: CPR, KVR, E&N; CNR, CNoR, GTPR; and PGER, BCR. The collection excludes material regarding streetcar systems and rapid transit, but includes long distance electric interurbans.

The Kent Sedgwick fonds consists of 5.8 linear meters of textual records relating to his research interests of the history of the Central Interior of British Columbia. Sedgwick was an urban planner with the City of Prince George, as well as one-time instructor in geography at CNC and part time lecturer in Geography at UNBC.

The subject files contain original research notes, research notes from interviews, news clippings, research copies of photos/maps – primarily related to the history and historical geography of the Central Interior of BC, especially Prince George, Giscome and East Line communities covering the period c.1900-c.2010. Research also includes extensive notes on geographic features, landscapes, interpretative trails, architectural history, industrial history and First Nations history of region. Also research notes on Alexander Mackenzie, George Dawson and geographical research related to Northern Alberta.

Miscellaneous forest history material

The Miscellaneous Forest History Material series consists of material created or used by various logging and pulp mill companies. Includes forms, union materials, maps, plans and other records related to the forestry sector in British Columbia. The series also comprises publications related to equipment and employee training, and correspondence and memorandum developed by B.C. Chemicals, a division of Canfor.

The Canadian National Railway series consists of administrative records, safety records, correspondence between departments, labour records, records pertaining to train movements, maintenance records, and ephemera. Includes publications concerning the topics of unionized labour, railway operation, maintenance of way, handling of hazardous materials, safety, public interest, and the two Royal Tours of 1939 and 1959. Also consists of maps and technical drawings depicting Canadian National Rail lines and equipment.

Timber Sales

Series consists of timber sale contracts, correspondence, logging inspection reports, diagrams, datasheets, prescription reports, and maps.

Research and Experimental Forests

Series contains aerial photographs, stump data sheets, permanent sample plot summaries, correspondence, minutes from meetings, research proposals, budget reports, measurement charts, various historical documents, permits, field notes, overview diagrams, and an inventory of the 1994 Northwood Pulp and Timber donation to the Fraser Fort George Museum.

Aleza Lake Various Historical Records

File consists of documents, radiograms, and correspondence regarding various administrative issues ranging from costs, living conditions, timber sales, research projects, and queries from the public. Much of this correspondence is between Tim Decie, Forester in Charge of Aleza Lake, and R.P Silsbury, Head of the Research Division between the years of 1953 and 1967. Also included are contracts and receipts from 1964, documents regarding the closure of the Aleza Lake Experiment Station, and meeting minutes.

Management and Working Plans

Series contains working and management plans, a policy handbook, drafts, correspondence, proposals, recommendations, revenue records, photographs, handwritten notes, maps, and planning projects.

File contains handwritten cross section book, original studies with handwritten measurement charts and black and white photos, loose pages of original correspondence, handwritten diagrams and measurement charts, loose handwritten tally sheets, black and white photographs, hand coloured plot diagrams, photocopies of aerial photographs, and original correspondence for Plot 160.

Aleza Lake Research Forest - Volume 1

File contains plot summaries of selected permanent sample plots, correspondence regarding field courses, records of management committee meetings from 1991 and 1990, documents and correspondence pertaining to the re-opening of the Aleza Lake Research Forest, partial cutting summaries, research proposals and studies, cost and revenues documents, a 1961 biography on Percy Barr, charts covering remeasurements of permanent sample plots, hand written correspondence from 1990 discussing the history of marking crews, and a brief history of the Aleza Lake Experiment Station.
