Series consists of records created and collected in relation to research projects Dr. Paul Sanborn was engaged in, often with other colleagues, during his employment with the BC Ministry of Forests and/or the University of Northern British Columbia. These archival research records are predominantly unpublished documents, reports, data, and photographs. Some of Sanborn's research projects did not result in a formal scientific publication. In other instances, some of Sanborn's research projects resulted in only a portion of the collected data utilized for a formal publication.

Sanborn compiled details about each research project and its associated records in a summary note. Each of these notes is provided in PDF format along with its research project series. These notes serve as an essential guide for researchers who wish to interpret, utilize, and repurpose Sanborn's data for other future research projects.

Series consists of maps, plans, and drawings collected by faculty in the UNBC School of Planning and Sustainability. The majority of these maps reflect the planning history of the City of Prince George and include large format, hand-drawn plans created by the City Planning Department from the 1970s and 1980s. Series consists of records created and collected by Gary Runka during and after his time with the British Columbia Agricultural Land Commission. In the early 1970s, Runka served as the first general manager of the BC Agricultural Land Commission, the independent provincial body that has administered BC's Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) for over 40 years. As the first manager, Runka spearheaded the establishment of the ALR undertaking the technical tasks of setting ALR agricultural use boundaries, policies and procedures, as well as the building awareness and support for farmland preservation within government and with the public. He later served as Commission chair. Records include correspondence, informational material, publications, clippings, news releases, memoranda, symposium/conference material, reports, speech notes, and other textual material. Also includes seven maps, two buttons, six floppies, eighty slides, and one audio cassette tape.

Series consists of graphic material depicting railways in British Columbia. Includes prints, negatives, and postcards.

Gary Runka was a hobbyist photographer and documented his work and personal life through photography as he travelled across every region of British Columbia. His photographs document the evolution of British Columbia communities and regions over a 30 year period. Gary Runka's core interest was land and changing land uses. Many of his photographs tell a story of urban edge and/or natural resource compatibility/conflict. There are also a substantial number of photographs related to soils, including soil profiles, soil erosion and land (topography, drainage etc.) capability for agriculture. The collection also includes specific client-related photos, tied to Land Sense Ltd. client file job numbers.

The collection also documents personal travels and hiking trips throughout British Columbia and backpacking in some historic areas, such as the West Coast Trail and Cape Scott. These photographs also represent land evolution over time, including extent of alpine glaciation or biodiversity/plant species inhabiting the area.

Series consists of the client file project records of G.G. Runka Land Sense Ltd., Gary Runka's consultancy business (co-owned with Joan Sawicki until 1991). G.G. Runka Land Sense Limited was incorporated as a company on 30 Nov. 1978 and dissolved on 30 Nov. 2018. Most business activity ceased after Gary Runka's death in July 2013. The company provided comprehensive professional services in land inventory, environmental assessment, integrated resource management, land and water use conflict resolution and interdisciplinary land use planning. Over the course of the company's operation, Gary Runka and his firm consulted on 681 assignments ranging from very large projects (such as the Site C project) to small residential/commercial land capability assessments.

The Land Sense Ltd. client files generally include records such as correspondence, contracts, invoices, project reports, publications, ephemera, memoranda, map excerpts, legal documents, meeting materials, clippings, and handwritten notes. Some client files are accompanied by related maps, photographs, aerial photographs, and/or digital records on storage media.

The research of Dr. Joselito Arocena was extensive and multi-disciplinary. The records contained within this series of research material provide only a small glimpse of the depth and breadth of his research portfolio. The majority of Dr. Arocena's research results were released in his 200+ academic publications over the course of his career. This series contains a selection of research records that were unpublished and cover research projects that relate to the health of BC indigenous communities, the McGregor Model Forest, and others.

Series contains material created and collected by Kent Sedgwick over the course of his work with the Prince George Heritage Commission, the Alexander Mackenzie Heritage Trail Association, and other local organizations. The files primarily consist of meeting minutes, typescript documents, and correspondence between Sedgwick and the organizations.

Series consists of photographs taken and collected by Kent Sedgwick that primarily depict communities within the Central Interior of British Columbia, especially Prince George, Giscome, and the East Line area. Kent Sedgwick used photography to document the development and history of the natural and built landscape of the British Columbia Central Interior. The photographs depict geographic features, landscapes, previous settlements, architectural history, and industrial history.

Kent Sedgwick’s research subject files contain original research notes, interviews and oral histories, news clippings, and collected primary and secondary sources. The series also includes both original and reproduction photographs, audio recordings, and maps. The subject files primarily relate to the history, urban planning, and historical geography of the Central Interior of British Columbia, especially Prince George area and the East Line communities over the course of the 20th century. They also include extensive notes on geographic features, landscapes, interpretative trails, architectural history, industrial history, history of Western exploration and land survey, and the First Nations history of the region.

Series consists of material collected and created by Kent Sedgwick in relation to his writings, publications, editorial work, and lectures. The files contain material regarding Kent Sedgwick’s writing and lectures on the Lheidli T’enneh cemetery; his book "Monumental Transformation: The Story of Prince George's National Historic Monument"; his book chapter "Crossing the Divide: Northern Approaches to New Caledonia"; his book "Giscome Chronicle: The rise and demise of a sawmill community in central British Columbia, 1912-1976"; edits done to June Chamberland’s book "From Broadaxe to Clay Chinking: Stories about the Pioneers in and around the Prince George area"; writing for the Prince George Heritage Advisory Committee; and Sedgwick’s MA thesis on the Peyto Glacier. The files primarily consist of notes, correspondence, and completed works.

Series contains material created during Kent Sedgwick’s teaching appointments at the College of New Caledonia and the University of Northern British Columbia. He held a position as a Geography Instructor at CNC from 1970 until 1983 and did frequent guest lectures at UNBC until he became an adjunct professor from 2003 until 2009. He conducted guest lectures and taught course on historical geography and local history. The files primarily consist of lectures, notes, and correspondence between Sedgwick and the institutions.

Series contains two diplomas awarded to Dr. Ainley by the University of Northern British Columbia, news clippings, and photographs. Series also includes some of her activities during her retirement including her art exhibits, a cruise, and membership in Federation of BC Writers.

Series documents academic research undertaken by Dr. Marika Ainley throughout her academic career. Timlin. Series consists of photocopies of articles; correspondence; bibliographies; draft and published versions of articles, conference proceedings, and monographs; interviews and transcripts; recordings of conferences; statistical data; questionnaires; consent, submission, and other forms; pamphlets and other material from conferences; applications for grants and funding; overhead transparencies; photographs; and notes.

Series consists of the photographs taken and collected by Dr. Joselito Arocena. Arocena kept an extensive photographic slide collection for teaching, demonstration, research, and personal purposes. Included here from his slide collection is a large selection of images that feature his UNBC work and the Northern BC region. This series also contains digital photographs that Arocena created or collected.

Series consists of over 797 images related to Ms. Campagnolo’s personal and professional life. Images include personal photographs related to Ms. Campagnolo’s early years in Prince Rupert including her career in broadcasting and theatrical production as well as her political career and tenure as Lieutenant Governor. The bulk of the photographs relate to Ms. Campagnolo’s political career in federal politics including: 40+ images of Ms. Campagnolo’s First Political Campaign, as a Liberal Party Candidate for the Federal Riding of Skeena in 1974 including images of trips in June 1974 by then Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and Margaret Trudeau, as well as a visit by then M.P. Jean Chretien [later Prime Minister] to Northern BC to campaign for Campagnolo. As well it includes 40+ images of Ms. Campagnolo’s tours and events as Member of Parliament for the Skeena riding from 1974 – 1976; 60 + images of Campagnolo on Tours and Events as Minister of State, Fitness and Amateur Sport, 1976 – 1977 including images with Canadian politicians including former and future Prime Ministers: Pierre Trudeau, John Diefenbaker, Jean Chretien and John Turner; Canadian politicians Jean Sauve and Thérèse Casgrain, and Governor Generals Adrienne Clarkson and Michaëlle Jean; members of the British Royal Family including Queen Elizabeth II, international politicians and dignitaries including Pope Paul X, Donald Coggan, Archbishop of Canterbury, First Lady Rosalyn Carter, anthropologist Margaret Mead, Canadian media personalities including musician Leona Boyd. It includes 60+ images of Campagnolo’s international Ministry of Sport Tours including those of Cuba, 1977 – 1978 and the European Sports Tour with Team Canada (Hockey Canada), 1977 – 1978 as well 200+ images related to Campagnolo’s involvement in Ministry of Sport Events in Canada including images from the Commonwealth Games, Edmonton, held 3-12 August 1978 and the Canada Winter Games, Brandon, Manitoba, held 12-24 February 1979. The series also includes over 60 images of Campagnolo’s Post Political Office Activities (1979 – 1982) including activities in TV broadcasting and her involvement in the Canadian bid for the 1988 Olympic Games, her non-profit and volunteer activities including her involvement in a Canadian University Service Overseas (CUSO) mission, in North-eastern Thailand in 1980. Other images include 20+ images related to Campagnolo’s tenure as the President of the Liberal Party of Canada, 1982 - 1986 including Liberal Party Conventions and functions and including the official portrait of Iona Campagnolo as Liberal Party President, taken by noted photographer Yousuf Karsh, in 1986. Additional images in the series include 50+ images of Campagnolo’s Professional and Public Service, from 1987 - 1999 including CUSO and WHO missions by Campagnolo, images of Campagnolo receiving an Honourary Doctor of Laws at Brock University; 40+ images of Campagnolo in activities relating to her position as Chancellor at the University of Northern British Columbia 1992 – 2004 including her Chancellor Tours of the regions that UNBC serves and official portraits. The remainder of the photographic series consists of 60+ images relating to activities, ceremonies and events attended by the Honourable Campagnolo as Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, 2001 - 2007 including her Honour’s work on the Terrace Gardens, at Government House and images of Governor Generals Michaëlle Jean and Adrienne Clarkson’s visits to Government House, Victoria, in March 2006.

Series consists of records relating to the personal life of author and journalist Audrey Smedley L'Heureux. Includes a commemoratory home video DVD production that recognizes Audrey L’Heureux on her 80th birthday as a valued member of her family and as an accomplished community figure. This series also includes a photograph of Audrey L'Heureux in the 1970s.

Series contains material relating to Ainley's personal projects and research and professional projects. The material consists of transcribed copies of Ainley's early articles; drafts of sections, notes, research material and correspondence relating to "Creating Complicated Lives: Women and Science at English-Canadian Universities, 1880-1980"; conference proceedings, research material, notes and correspondence relating to her research project, "Re-explorations: new perspectives on gender, environment and the transfer of knowledge in 19th and 20th century Canada and Australia"; material, predominately course descriptions and syllabi, relating to administering the Women's Studies Program at the University of Northern British Columbia; and photographs and slides relating to both her research and her personal life and hobbies. Series consists of research subject files accumulated by Audrey L'Heureux over the course of her journalism and writing careers, with material collected between 1960 and 2005. L'Heureux arranged her subject files alphabetically; the files were organized by topics such as specific communities, people, historical events, industries, and geographic features. The files consist of reproductions from secondary sources such as periodicals and publications, as well as reproductions from primary sources from other archives (including copy prints of historical photographs). The files also include newspaper clippings, maps, correspondence, books, postcards, and journal articles. The material in the files covers a date range of 1860 to 2005, but material from earlier dates are reproductions only.

The content of the research subject files spans Northern and Central British Columbia, with a focus on the communities of Smithers, Prince George, and Vanderhoof where L'Heureux lived. L'Heureux's research subject files cover the transitional phases in British Columbia’s history, including natural resource extraction, the impact of the railways, industrialization, land survey, and interactions with Indigenous communities. Other topics reflect changes to British Columbia post-industrialization, including collected research material on fisheries, telegraph lines, law enforcement, and historic sites. L’Heureux also collected research material about the people who shaped the province and local community figures in Northern and Central British Columbia.

The Photographic Materials series consists of 6100 photographs, 900 slides and negatives documenting a wide variety of subject areas pertaining to both the operations of Cassiar Asbestos Corporation Ltd., and the company township of Cassiar, B.C. Types of subject areas found within this series include, but are not limited to: mine, plant, labour, and townsite operations at the company towns of Cassiar and Clinton Creek (including community activities associated therein and townsite development); construction of plant and mine buildings ; mines and equipment not owned by Cassiar Asbestos Corporation, but which are believed to have been used for operational research purposes ; aerial photographs ; company exploration of further mineral deposits outside of Cassiar ; official tours ; community images, promotional material ; executive portraits. The Photographic Materials series has been further subdivided into the following 4 subseries: Exploration & Development, Construction, General (Mining) Operations & (Townsite) Community Operations, and Corporate Affairs.

Audrey Smedley L'Heureux writing, and journalism career spanned her editorship of the Nechako Chronicle (1964-1971), the Smithers Interior News (1974-1975), and the Alcan Ingot (1976-1977). Through her journalism experience, Audrey L’Heureux gained an interest in British Columbia history and began compiling her research into books.

This series consists of records relating to L'Heureux's writing, including book manuscripts, book reviews, and correspondence about publications. L'Heureux's "From Trail to Rail" book series was her most widely available publication. This series includes:

• "From Trail to Rail: Surveys & Gold, 1862 to 1904" published in 1987;
• "From Trail to Rail: Settlement Begins, 1905-1914" published in 1989; and,
• a third 1983 manuscript tentatively titled "From Trail to Rail: [Out of the Heart of British Columbia]" that was never published.
  Draft manuscripts for all three of these publications are included in this series, in both digital and print format. The series also includes research materials for Audrey L'Heureux's first book "Northern B.C. in Retrospect" which was published in 1979.

Consists of photographs depicting the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, the Pacific Great Eastern Railway, the British Columbia Railway, the Canadian Pacific Railway, and the Canadian National Railway. Also includes photographs of various forestry-related scenes.

This Political Papers series illustrates the Hon. Iona Campagnolo's political career as Member of Parliament for Skeena and Minister of State for Fitness and Amateur Sport. Types of records reflective of her political career include: speeches, correspondence, itineraries, memoranda, manuscripts, newspaper clippings, background material, photographs, and ephemera.

Series consists of documents providing information on the Columbia Cellulose Company, Limited including its history, historical and geographical context, and plans for the future. These documents often include photographs, maps, and technical drawings of the mills. Series consists of Skeena Kraft press kit; Feasibility Study of Nass River Valley Log Transport Systems; A Summary History and Progress; Development Study: Northern resources; Columbia Cellulose Company, Limited.

The images consists primarily of 130+ photographs taken by or belonging to Reverend R.W. Large, MD which depict communities on the Northwest Coast between approximately 1898 and 1920 including Bella Bella, Rivers Inlet, and Port Simpson, including native villages in which Reverend Large worked. Images show scenes of native fishing, canneries, mission hospitals, churches, girls schools, portraits of native families, and Northwest Coast totems. Other images include 25+ photographs and postcards from the Large family depicting ships and boats on the North Coast.
