During the 1980s, Agriculture Canada pedologists Scott Smith (retired from Summerland Research Station, formerly based in Whitehorse) and Charles Tarnocai (retired from Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa) had a large field program which addressed the trends in soil development in the central Yukon. Across this region, particularly between Whitehorse and Dawson City, the land surfaces and surficial deposits vary greatly in age due to the differing extents of glaciations over the past ~2 million years.

Tarnocai and Smith shared the unpublished data and soil samples from this work with Dr. Paul Sanborn, and this resulted in a student project published as:
Daviel, E., P. Sanborn, C. Tarnocai, and C.A.A. Smith. 2011. Clay mineralogy and chemical properties of argillic horizons in central Yukon paleosols. Canadian Journal of Soil Science 91: 83-93. https://doi.org/10.4141/cjss10067

This data set consists of transcribed data from lab data sheets, showing McQuesten-Dawson City paleosol data from the Tarnocai and Smith 1983 AAFC Yukon Paleosol Study. The data set includes chemical and particle size data for Tarnocai & Smith samples, as determined by the Ag Canada lab. Note that the “Site” column indicates the NTS topographic map sheet (e.g. 115P/13) for the sampling locations.

This file consists of copies of two manuscript items relating to the history of the Oblates in Northern British Columbia; the third item is a copy of the transcription and translation of one of these accounts. Includes:

  • A copy of a type-written unpublished account possibly written c. 1922 entitled "Indian Schools of Fort St. James and Fraser Lake, B.C." The account is written by Father Elphage Allard, OMI on the founding of the residential school at Fort St. James and later of the building of the residential school at Lejac, near Fraser Lake, BC. Allard refers to his, and his younger siblings', also named Father Allard, involvement in the building of the residential schools at Fort St. James in 1916-1917 and subsequently at Fraser Lake ca. 1920-1922. Father Allard provides a detailed account of daily life and spiritual work conducted by the Oblates at the schools including daily routines of the First Nations students, dormitory life, educational curriculum, religious education, and arrival of a group of the Sisters of the Infant Jesus Congregation to assist at the school. The account provides descriptions of the 1918 flu epidemic and deaths that occurred among communities at Fort St. James, Pinchi, Tachi, Fraser Lake and Lake Porteur; involvement of the Anglo-Europeans in the construction of the schools; and interactions with the Chinese cook and Indian Agent in the communities. The manuscript also provides brief account of Allard's journey to provide religious services to other First Nations communities including Fort Graham, McLeod Lake, Atlin and Whitehorse. Both Father Allards were subsequently dismissed from involvement in the Fraser Lake School in 1922.
  • A copy of a handwritten account by Father Jean-Marie Lejeune entitled "Comment la Sténographie a été introduite dez les sauvages" written by Lejeune at the Indian Missionary, Kamloops, B.C. c.1890-93 in which he describes his introduction of the shorthand in British Columbia to First Nations in the Kamloops region and the subsequent publication of the newsletter entitled Kamloops Wawa.
  • A transcription and translation of Father Lejeune's account by William Poser with annotations.

Parte de Audrey Smedley L'Heureux fonds

File consists of research material relating to the Omineca Gold Rush which was a gold rush in British Columbia in the Omineca region of the Northern Interior of the province. Gold was first discovered there in 1861, but the rush didn't begin until late in 1869 with the discovery at Vital Creek. There were several routes to the goldfields: two were from Fort St. James, one of which was a water route through the Stuart and Tachie Rivers to Trembleur Lake to Takla Lake and the other was overland, called the Baldy Mountain route. A third route came in overland from Hazelton on the Skeena River and a fourth route used the Fraser River and crossed over the Giscome Portage to Summit Lake, through McLeod Lake, and up the Finlay River to the Omineca River. Materials include one large photograph from the BC Provincial Archives of Machanry of the SS Enterprise at Tremblay Lake in June 7th, 1913. Other materials include newspaper clippings and two photographic negatives of the machinery of the SS Enterprise.
