The manuscript is a collection of 61 oral stories recorded by L'Heureux from early settlers of British Columbia. "Trail to Rail: Out of the Heart of British Columbia" is the first collection in a series of three publications titled "Trail to Rail: Settlement Begins and Surveys and Gold". However, "Out of the Heart of British Columbia" was never published. The other two volumes of the "Trail to Rail" manuscript were later published under the title "From Trail to Rail" in 1989.
