Fonds consists of the research and professorial records of Dr. Joselito Arocena, a founding faculty member of UNBC. Arocena was an internationally-recognized soil scientist and UNBC’s first Canada Research Chair. His records demonstrate his accomplishments as an academic and researcher, as well as his many and varied interdisciplinary research endeavours. Also included are selections from Arocena’s extensive photographic slide collection which illustrate his teaching, research projects, and personal interests.

File consists of records relating to the Arocena's application and offer of employment at UNBC as Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Natural Resources and Environmental Studies. His start date at UNBC was 1 July 1994.

File consists of Dr. Joselito Arocena's promotion package for rising to the rank of full professor at UNBC.

Research

The research of Dr. Joselito Arocena was extensive and multi-disciplinary. The records contained within this series of research material provide only a small glimpse of the depth and breadth of his research portfolio. The majority of Dr. Arocena's research results were released in his 200+ academic publications over the course of his career. This series contains a selection of research records that were unpublished and cover research projects that relate to the health of BC indigenous communities, the McGregor Model Forest, and others.

"Changes in Ecological Characteristics During Succession after Forest Fires in the Wet Montane Forests of the McGregor Model Forest"

File consists of an original copy of the final report of the Ecological Processes Team of the McGregor Model Forest for Project No. 2015. The report is entitled "Changes in Ecological Characteristics During Succession after Forest Fires in the Wet Montane Forests of the McGregor Model Forest" and was released on May 1998 by S. Craig DeLong (BC Ministry of Forests), Hughes Massicotte (UNBC), and Joselito Arocena (UNBC).

BC Well Index

File consists of a report from the BC Wells Index provided by the Ministry of Energy, Mines, and Petroleum Resources to Dr. Joselito Arocena. Also includes related documentation to interpret the index.

"Ecosystem and Community Health of the Nat'oot'en First Nation - Co-Management Alternatives for the Babine Lake Watershed"

File consists of a research proposal to the TriCouncil Secretariat entitled "Ecosystem and Community Health of the Nat'oot'en First Nation - Co-Management Alternatives for the Babine Lake Watershed". The principal investigator for the proposal was Darwyn Coxson. Dr. Joselito Arocena was a named co-investigator, along with many others.

Healthy Land, Healthy Future study

File consists of research material relating to the "Healthy Land, Healthy Future - A Community Study to Examine the Health Issues and their Relationship to Environmental Contaminants with the Takla Lake First Nation and the Tsay Keh Dene Traditional Territories". Includes research grant proposals, draft reports, scientific data, field notes, digital GIS data, photographs, and correspondence.

Sampling locations at Williston Reservoir

File consists of sampling data from "Healthy Land, Healthy Future - A Community Study to Examine the Health Issues and their Relationship to Environmental Contaminants with the Takla Lake First Nation and the Tsay Keh Dene Traditional Territories". Includes sampling locations and sampling procedures.

Photographs

Series consists of the photographs taken and collected by Dr. Joselito Arocena. Arocena kept an extensive photographic slide collection for teaching, demonstration, research, and personal purposes. Included here from his slide collection is a large selection of images that feature his UNBC work and the Northern BC region. This series also contains digital photographs that Arocena created or collected.

File consists of slides noted by Arocena as relating to his FSTY 205 course. People and places depicted include: UNBC Forestry faculty, Aleza Lake, Klinka, Tabor Creek, Lake Babine, Bell Mine site, Smithers, Kitwanga, Alaska Highway, Bear Glacier, Muncho Lake, Mt. Robson, and UNBC Campus.
