Program notes for Aurora Borealis:
"Aurora Borealis" was commissioned by the Prince George Symphony for the opening convocation ceremonies of the new University of Northern British Columbia. The opening brass fanfares and hunting horn calls give way to a more lyrical middle section which then leads to a colourful musical depiction of the "Northern Lights". Of special interest is a new technique which the composer calls "hohe Bogen" or "raised bows". The score indicates that at selected moments, the members of the string section are to hold their bows high in the air (an upbow flourish). The white hair of the bows represent the "Northern Lights" which quite often appear as white, cloud-like streaks in the sky.
