Fonds predominately reflects Ainley's research as a professor at the University of Northern British Columbia. Her research is arranged into thirteen subseries. Research material includes: photocopies of publications and archival material, correspondence, bibliographies, research interviews, transcripts, draft manuscripts, photographs, and other records. A series of personal records includes: retirement activities, her hobbies of art and writing, diplomas, and photographs. The series on her administrative and supervisory activities of professorship of women’s studies and environmental studies is arranged according to the major activities with which Ainley was involved and includes: meeting minutes, memoranda, reports, correspondence, employment, and other records. A series of electronic records relating, predominately, to Ainley’s research includes: draft manuscripts, conference proceedings, bibliographies, transcripts, correspondence, curricula vitae and other records. A series of professional development records includes records from conferences she attended and occasionally presented at as well as other professional development activities that she undertook. A series of correspondence predominantly consists of personal correspondence but also includes professional correspondence related to her research and occupation.

File consists of a photocopy of the British National Catalogue on books published between 1837 and 1857; correspondence and early draft manuscripts of "Science in Canada's 'Backwoods'?: Catharine Parr Traill" under its original title, "Catharine Parr Traill (1802-1899): A Woman Science Writer in 19th Century Canada;" Ainley's research notes; correspondence relating to research at the National Archives of Canada; a curatorial essay for an exhibition at McGill University, entitled, "Leaves from the Physick Garden: Historic Herbals from the Osler Library and the Department of Rare books and Special Collections;" a photocopy of the National Union Catalog of the United States of pre-1956 imprints; and transcripts of correspondence sent by Parr Traill to Katie Traill, Parr Traill's granddaughter, and Frances Stewart, Parr Traill's neighbour and friend.

File consists of 4 overhead transparencies, photocopies of images and proceedings from a lecture at Concordia University in 1994, entitled, "Science from the 'Backwoods'?: Catharine Parr Traill (1802-1899);" conference proceedings from Ainley's lecture, "Women and the Popularization of Science: 19th-century Women Science Writers in Canada" at 8th Kingston Conference of the Canadian Science and Technology Historical Association in Kingston, Ontario in 1993; two copies of the proceedings from "An 'Active Botanist': Catharine Parr Traill (1802-1899) and Women's Science Writing in Canada" at the Catharine Traill Naturalists' Club in Montreal, Quebec in 1994; a listing of women who corresponded with Charles Darwin; research notes by Ainley; an agenda from a History of Science Society (HSS) Women's Committee meeting in October 1994, a program addendum from an HSS conference; correspondence relating to submissions to "Science in the Vernacular" and archival research relating to Parr Traill; a curatorial essay for an exhibition at McGill University, entitled, "Leaves from the Physick Garden: Historic Herbals from the Osler Library and the Department of Rare books and Special Collections;" a photocopy of an excerpt of from "Studies of Plant Life in Canada;" and a photocopy of a biography of Parr Traill by J.L.
