The Prince George Railway & Forestry Museum Society Collection consists primarily of textual, photographic, and cartographic records related to the regional developments of the railway industry in Northern BC. A predominant portion of the collection is made up of material from the Canadian National Railway; other railways represented include the Pacific Great Eastern Railway, the British Columbia Railway (BC Rail), the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, the Grand Trunk Railway, the Intercolonial Railway, and the Okanagan Express. Significant geographical areas covered include Prince George, the Peace River Region, Terrace, Bulkley Valley, Hazelton and Prince Rupert.

The forestry industry is represented in the collection with operational and financial records from Fyfe Lake Sawmill Ltd., which operated southwest of Prince George in the 1950s.

The collection has been organized into series according to creator, each of which also has been arranged to subseries, file and item level, where applicable. This collection consists of eight series, as follows:

Subseries includes research material created and collected by Kent Sedgwick relating to land survey, development, and settlement in Prince George and British Columbia. Land surveys were conducted in British Columbia by surveyors George Dawson, the North Coast Land Company, Alfred R.C. Selwyn, and the Geological Survey of Canada during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. James C. Anderson and engineer J. Gill conducted topographical surveys for the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway on Fort George and the Indian Reserve. Surveyors and land plot companies developed the land for sale to promote settlement in the area. Also includes materials regarding the continued development of the City of Prince George throughout the 20th century. The files primarily consist of newspaper clippings, research notes, and photocopied documents.

File consists of records created and collected by Kent Sedgwick regarding Cottonwood Island in connection with his employment with the City of Prince George Planning Department. Includes briefs, proposals, memoranda, correspondence, newspaper clippings, questionnaires, legal correspondence, meeting minutes, and photocopied excerpts from maps/plans. Also includes two polaroid photo prints depicting garbage in Cottonwood Island Park circa 1979. Highlights include:

Pennock, W.B. RIVER CROSSING EXERCISE. Prince George, B.C. 2 SEP 43. Presented to Major-General H.N. Ganong G.O.C. 8 CDN. DIV. by Lt-Col. W.B. Pennock C.R.C.E. 8 CDN. DIV. 1943. Oblong 4to. 24pp of text, color maps, one showing the proposed crossing of Nechako River. 20 b/w snapshot photos, mounted with corners, each with captions + Appendix A, B and C of facts and figures. A large folding contemporary map of Vernon is laid in, with one of the training zones (?) highlighted on the map in a red square box. Fabricoid spine and corners.

The original typescript for a (presumably confidential and secret) document listing the preparations for defensive manoeuvres in the event of war with Japan taking place in Northern British Columbia. This document describes a simulation of what events and defences could take place, including how to conduct river crossings; when in the war game, the author imagines what would happen should the Japanese invade Prince Rupert as a starting point for the invasion of Canada.

An important document providing insight into the thinking of the Canadian military while preparing for the possibility of Japan extending its war into the North Pacific Theatre during World War II.

Series contains material created and collected by Kent Sedgwick over the course of his work with the Prince George Heritage Commission, the Alexander Mackenzie Heritage Trail Association, and other local organizations. The files primarily consist of meeting minutes, typescript documents, and correspondence between Sedgwick and the organizations.

Subseries consists of materials collected by Kent Sedgwick for research on the geography and natural resources in Prince George and its region. Includes material on the natural resource industry, including the opening of the McArthur Sawmill, the W. Lamb and Sons Lumber Sawmill, and mining; photocopied aerial photographs of Prince George; the climate, temperatures, and flooding; and the geographical features of Prince George.

Map depicts boundaries of study areas, including major study area, community study area, and the city of Prince George boundaries.

This fonds consists of material created and collected by Kent Sedgwick, author, professor, Prince George urban planner, and prominent local historian. This body of records documents Sedgwick’s research interests in the history and geography of the Central Interior of British Columbia. The fonds also reflects his work as a Prince George Senior City Planner, his involvement in local community organizations, and his teaching at the College of New Caledonia and the University of Northern British Columbia.

The fonds includes:
1) Photographs taken by Kent Sedgwick across British Columbia, predominantly in the Central Interior region;
2) Research subject files consisting of original research documentation and collected reference material, predominantly focusing on topics relating to local history, city planning, and geography in the Prince George area and the British Columbia Central Interior;
3) Documentation of Kent Sedgwick’s community involvement, including records created over the course of his work with the Prince George Heritage Commission, , the Alexander Mackenzie Heritage Trail Association, and other local organizations;
4) Writings, publications, and lectures written, edited, or conducted by Kent Sedgwick;
5) Professorial records consisting of lectures and material relating to Sedgwick’s teaching appointments at the College of New Caledonia and the University of Northern British Columbia;
6) Maps collected by Kent Sedgwick covering historical and contemporary British Columbia.

Series consists of maps, plans, and drawings collected by faculty in the UNBC School of Planning and Sustainability. The majority of these maps reflect the planning history of the City of Prince George and include large format, hand-drawn plans created by the City Planning Department from the 1970s and 1980s. Maps from City of Prince George Official Community Plans are also included.

Map depicts the City of Prince George in 1976, including the Fraser River, Nechacko River, Cariboo Highway, Carney St., and Patricia Blvd. where the electoral district boundary was proposed along for the two districts of Fort Nelson-Peace River and Prince George-Bulkley Valley.

Subseries consists of materials collected by Kent Sedgwick for research relating to Lheidli T'enneh First Nations. The Lheidli T'enneh are a sub-group of the Dakelh people whose traditional territory includes the city of Prince George, British Columbia. These files primarily consist of material regarding the original Lheidli T'enneh reserve and cemetery, the reserve relocation, and the desecration of the cemetery.
