General note
General note
Item list available. - Of the 398 photographs, 288 comprise three small photo albums while the remaining 110 are loose. These three photo albums are believed to have belonged to James ("Jim") Russell Mackenzie, another survey crewman who accompanied Frank Swannell on his various expeditions in 1930, 1931, 1935 and 1937 along with Phipps. It is believed that Mackenzie assembled these albums and wrote the accompanying interior annotations; however strict authorship of the photograph itself cannot be definitively ascertained as many duplicates exist in various fonds of different members of Swannell's expedition parties. It is believed that survey party crewmen shared photos just as they had shared the experience. In this collection, however, Mackenzie's name is given as that of photographer. Upon Jim Mackenzie's death on 22 March 1963, his wife gave these albums to Al Phipps.
