1961 - Movie Projectors

Photograph depicts man seated on stool between two carbon arc Horton movie projectors. These were 16 mm French projectors, and were located at the Cassiar Recreational Center. They were used before the new movie theater was built in the late 1970s. Handwritten annotation on verso of photograph: "1961".

1965 - Unknown Woman & Men in Company Store

Photograph depicts two men purchasing items in foreground, facing away from photographer. Unknown woman stands at till behind counter in midground, wearing long white professional jacket. Stocked shelves on wall in background. Store appears to be stocked with groceries and general supplies.

1965 - Hilde Voss behind Snackbar Counter

Photograph depicts Hilde Voss in left foreground, kitchen supplies on either side. Unknown man sits across counter on right. Other individuals seated in background in front of door and windows. Handwritten annotations on recto of photograph: "WAITRESS - HIELDA[sic?] VOSS".

1965 - Mine Bus parked at old Mine Dry Change House

Photograph depicts unknown men entering back of bus, second bus on left. Old Mine Dry Change House in right background; power lines, vehicles, and trees in left background. These buses transported workers from the plant to the mine. Small pickup trucks called "crummies" with cabin mounted in box were used when traveling on the steeper road to the South Peak.

The winter bunkhouses contained double occupancy rooms with a common bathroom, and were distinguished from the summer bunkhouses which were generally considered less accommodating (see item 2000.1.1.3.19.84).

Photograph depicts the Cassiar valley. Handwritten annotation on verso of photograph: "1958 [1961 crossed through]", on recto: "Cassiar Asbestos Corporation Limited. Cassiar B.C. Townsite in foreground mill and ore storage in left middle ground," "Toronto set". It is believed that this photograph was made into a post card.

Silver Star Princesses at Cassiar Display Table

Photograph depicts three young women wearing "PRINCESS SILVER STAR" banners, standing to left of "CASSIAR ASBESTOS CORPORATION LTD" display table. Table features photos, rock samples possibly containing asbestos, and objects presumably made from asbestos fibre. Large snowflake symbol visible on wall in background. Photo speculated to have been taken at an event in Vernon, B.C. Handwritten annotation on verso of photograph: "1963".

1970 Labour Strike

File contains photographs depicting individuals at Cassiar on strike in the winter time, marching down roads, holding picket signs, carrying small children who hold signs, and driving cars covered with strike slogans. Many of the signs read "U.S.W.A. LOCAL 6536" (United Steel Workers of America).

  • Two photographs depict a man with a video recorder. Some photos feature plant buildings, two were taken at night. One photograph depicts a note that reads: "THERE WILL BE NO AFTERNOON SHIFT THURSDAY NOVEMBER 5th 1970."
  • Many photos depict areas in the mine showing snow impacts, fissures in the mountain, asbestos evidence and other environmental activity. The picket signs contain protests regarding contracts, safety, environment, and ethics.
  • Handwritten annotation on original envelope containing photographs: "Pictures 1970 Strike."
  • Integrated into file are fourteen photos from file marked "Mr. B. Pewsey" that depict an area where a large rock fell, measuring tape, and protest sign.

The fonds consists of audio reels and dubbed audio cassettes of a radio programs hosted by Jack Carbutt at CKPG Radio in Prince George, and includes transcriptions in electronic and textual format. This collection has been divided into the following three series: "Audio Recordings" (2000.21.1); "Transcriptions" (2000.21.2); and "Miscellaneous Materials" (2000.21.3).

The collection consists of 9 photographs and copies of photographs showing scenes of Prince Rupert and area, groups of townspeople, a stone totem pole at Metlakatla, and a man poling a dug-out canoe probably on the Skeena River. It includes two newspaper clippings, one from the BC Saturday Sunset dated September 14, 1912 and another from The Globe dated Saturday March 23, 1907. The bound volumes of the Prince Rupert Empire newspaper were transferred to Special Collections. See accompanying note.

Item is a photograph of Ray and Gladys Williston in fancy dress with a number of other people. Mr. & Mrs. Williston are the second couple from the left.
