Dr. Gordon Hartman

Series consists of Hartman’s records and collected material related to his activities as a research scientist, particularly his involvement in the Kemano Completion Project. The majority of the material consists of copies of publications related to Hartman’s research, many of which were written or annotated by him, such as reprints of journal articles, draft scientific reports, government publications, and newspaper clippings. Includes correspondence regarding the Nechako River court action between DFO, Alcan, and the province and scientific reports that were created in anticipation of the case. Also includes significant material emanating from the British Columbia Utilities Commission Kemano Completion Project Public Review, such as correspondence, BCUC newsletters and news releases, exhibits and evidence submitted to the review panel, documents produced for the hearings, and the final report. In addition, includes records and publications relating to the Nechako Fisheries Conservation Program, the Nechako Watershed Council, the Nechako Environmental Enhancement Fund, and the Nechako River Alliance.

Series consists of Shirvell’s records and collected material related to his activities as a research scientist, particularly his involvement in the Kemano Completion Project. Shirvell’s records are arranged into six subseries:
• literature review, consisting of published material;
• research and publications, consisting of Shirvell’s publications and research material;
• Envirocon and Alcan, consisting of Envirocon and Alcan publications and records;
• Nechako River court action, consisting of records related to the DFO-Alcan court case;
• Nechako Fisheries Conservation Program, consisting of material relating to NFCP; and,
• BCUC Kemano Completion Project Review, consisting of records relating to Shirvell’s participation in the public review.
The majority of the material in all subseries consists of copies of publications related to Shirvell’s activities and research, many of which were written or annotated by him, such as reprints of journal articles, draft scientific reports, government publications, and newspaper clippings. Shirvell’s research records comprise raw data, field notes, memoranda, and draft reports, many of which relate to his 1986 Nechako River salmon overwintering studies. Records regarding the Nechako River court action range from 1980 to 1987, and include correspondence, internal DFO memoranda, legal documents, and related scientific reports. Nechako watershed maps

File consists of various maps depicting areas in the Nechako watershed. Includes maps created by the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Survey and Mapping Branch of Nulki Lake, Fraser Lake, Vanderhoof, Big Bend Creek, and Hallett Lake. Also includes a BC Ministry of Environment Surveys and Resource Mapping Branch map of Tachick Lake.

Collection consists of records regarding the Kemano Completion Project collected by four scientists that were involved in the Department of Fisheries and Oceans review of Alcan’s project. The majority of the material consists of copies of publications related to the scientists’ research and activities, many of which were written or annotated by them, such as reprints of journal articles, draft scientific reports, government publications, and newspaper clippings. Original scientific research records comprise raw data, field notes, memoranda, and draft reports. Includes correspondence regarding the Nechako River court action between DFO, Alcan, and the province and scientific reports that were created in anticipation of the case. Also includes significant material emanating from the British Columbia Utilities Commission Kemano Completion Project Public Review, such as correspondence, BCUC newsletters and news releases, exhibits and evidence submitted to the review panel, documents produced for the hearings, and final reports. Utilization of the Nechako River by Chinook salmon

File consists of a draft paper from B.D. Tutty entitled "Utilization of Chinook Salmon Rearing in the Upper Nechako River", a paper by S.A. Macfarlane entitled "Utilization of the Nechako River by Chinook Salmon", and a summary of observation made and data recorded on rearing chinook salmon fry in the Nechako River by Department of Fisheries and Oceans' staff during field trips conducted from April 29 to May 2, 1980 and from June 23-29, 1980.

Total Gas Pressure (TGP) and flow analysis research on the Nechako and related correspondence

File consists of miscellaneous reports, research material, memoranda and correspondence related to Total Gas Pressure (TGP) research and/or flow analysis research. Includes copies of the following reports: "Effect of Elevated Water Temperatures on Infectious Diseases of Salmonids, Particularly Chinook Salmon" by G.R. Bell; and "Experience in Michigan with Gas Supersaturation" by Harry Westers.

Subseries primarily consists of reports and publications created by Envirocon Limited, the environmental consultants contracted by Alcan for the Kemano Completion Project environmental assessment. Also includes records created by Envirocon, Alcan, and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans regarding joint meetings and Envirocon's scientific methodology.

Nechako River Court Action

Subseries consists of records concerning the Nechako River court action that began in 1980 and ended in 1987 with a settlement agreement. The case (Attorney General of Canada vs. Attorney General of British Columbia vs. Alcan Aluminum) was in regard to the increased need for water rights to the Nechako River as a result of Alcan's Kemano Completion Project.

File predominately consists of correspondence relating to the Canada v. Alcan case. Includes an affidavit for the case, correspondence to and from legal counsel, a photocopy of Envirocon's "Review of the 1984 Nechako River Hydrothermal Monitoring and Control Program" sent from Alcan, and internal DFO memoranda.

Dr. Don Alderdice

Series consists of Alderdice’s records and collected material related to the Kemano Completion Project and his activities as a fisheries biologist. Early material includes research records on total gas pressure and flow analysis research, particularly in regards to the Nechako River, which Alderdice was working on in anticipation of the Nechako River court action. Records regarding the Nechako River court action range from 1984 to 1987, and include correspondence, internal DFO memoranda, and legal documents. Records created by Alderdice after his retirement from DFO in 1987 document his involvement with the British Columbia Utilities Commission Kemano Completion Project Public Review and his connection to the Siddon v. Mair court case. Also includes copies of publications related to Alderdice’s research and activities, such as reprints of journal articles, scientific reports, government publications, and newspaper clippings.
