Pump drill consisting of a length of wood with a heavy wooden whorl fixed toward the bottom end and a crossbar-like pump arm attached to the upper end; pump arm is free to move up and down the main length of wood through a hole in the arm's center. The notched ends of the pump arm are attached to the top of the pump by twisted gut cord. The central length of wood is rounded and handle-like at the base, tapering towards the top. The upper cubicles are on a level with the ground, which in front of them is excavated so that the fireplace in the centre is twelve feet below the surface. A ledge, for the use of slaves and dependents, is left half-way down."
