Train orders are mainly to do with the upgrading of track bed and track (136 lb continuous rail and 12" depth rock ballast) to accept carousel train of coal from northeastern BC and wheat from Ridley Terminals on the outskirts of Prince Rupert. Coal trains from Tumbler Ridge started running 1 December 1983.
