Arocena had just started his PhD fieldwork in 1988 under the supervision of Dr. Steve Pawluk. Persons depicted in the photographs include: Joselito Arocena (red hat), Dr. Steve Pawluk (blue hat), and Dr. Marvin Dudas. The photographer was Paul Sanborn, who was near completion of a 1-year post-doc with Dr. Pawluk.
