Series consists of records relating to the personal life of author and journalist Audrey Smedley L'Heureux. Includes a commemoratory home video DVD production that recognizes Audrey L’Heureux on her 80th birthday as a valued member of her family and as an accomplished community figure. This series also includes a photograph of Audrey L'Heureux in the 1970s.

This fonds encompasses the journalism, writing, and research of Audrey Ruth Smedley L'Heureux. L'Heureux's research interests focussed on northern and central British Columbia, beginning with pioneer settlement through to community life in the 2000s. L'Heureux's research also covered transitional phases of British Columbia history such as natural resource extraction, the impact of the railways, industrialization, and interactions with Indigenous communities. Predominantly organized in subject files, the L'Heureux's fonds provides collected research material on many topics relevant to the history of northern and central British Columbia. L'Heureux also collected numerous oral histories from pioneers in various northern and central British Columbia communities which informed her journalism and published works.

The Audrey Ruth Smedley L'Heureux fonds consists of three series. The first series consists of L'Heureux's research and subject files, a collection spanning her career as a journalist and author from 1970 to 2005. The second series consists of records relating to L'Heureux's writing, including manuscripts from her "From Trail to Rail" book series. The third series contains a small selection of L'Heureux's personal records, including a video that recounts L'Heureux's life story and accomplishments.

"The Story of My Life" is a DVD that was made for Audrey Ruth Smedley L'Heureux's 80th birthday. The video starts with Audrey's parents, Marion Lucy Auld Spencer Graham (mother) and (father) Bert Spencer. The beginning of the video detailed pre-war life in Vanderhoof and the struggles that Audrey's parents had while raising their three children Audrey, Pat, and Jim Spencer. Audrey later goes on to marry Jack Smedley and moves to the Smedley farm for a short time; the Smedley farm is sold in 1957 and later becomes the Vanderhoof Products & Timber Ltd. headquarters. Before leaving the farm, Jack and Audrey had three children together: Albert Smedley, Georgina Becker, and Teddy Smedley. Jack and Audrey divorced on August 26, 1969. Audrey describes her divorce as a freeing experience that allowed her to start her journey in journalism. For a brief time Audrey owned the Nechako Chronicle but sold it in 1971. After a short stint as a photojournalist at the Langley Advance, Audrey became an editor of the Interior News for a year then moved to the Ingot (Alcan) in Kitimat to become their editor. Audrey's industry experience allowed her to expand her field of research leading her to move to Smithers and Prince George. Audrey and Edmond Joseph L'Heureux married in August 12, 1971. Edmond and Audrey welcomed in seven grandchildren. Edmond L'Heureux died in 2001. The video ends with the awards and accomplishments given to Audrey L'Heureux, including her 1998 Community Booster of the Year award from the Vanderhoof Chamber of Commerce and her 1997 appointment to the Seniors Advisory Council of British Columbia.

Series consists of research subject files accumulated by Audrey L'Heureux over the course of her journalism and writing careers, with material collected between 1960 and 2005. L'Heureux arranged her subject files alphabetically; the files were organized by topics such as specific communities, people, historical events, industries, and geographic features. The files consist of reproductions from secondary sources such as periodicals and publications, as well as reproductions from primary sources from other archives (including copy prints of historical photographs). The files also include newspaper clippings, maps, correspondence, books, postcards, and journal articles. The material in the files covers a date range of 1860 to 2005, but material from earlier dates are reproductions only.

The content of the research subject files spans Northern and Central British Columbia, with a focus on the communities of Smithers, Prince George, and Vanderhoof where L'Heureux lived. L'Heureux's research subject files cover the transitional phases in British Columbia’s history, including natural resource extraction, the impact of the railways, industrialization, land survey, and interactions with Indigenous communities. Other topics reflect changes to British Columbia post-industrialization, including collected research material on fisheries, telegraph lines, law enforcement, and historic sites. L’Heureux also collected research material about the people who shaped the province and local community figures in Northern and Central British Columbia.

File consists of photocopied research materials on Sir Sandford Fleming (January 7, 1827 - July 22, 1915), a Scottish Canadian engineer and inventor who promoted worldwide standard time zones, a prime meridian, and use of the 24-hour clock as key elements to communicating the accurate time, all of which influenced the creation of Coordinated Universal Time. He designed Canada's first postage stamp, produced a great deal of work in the fields of land surveying and map making, engineered much of the Intercolonial Railway and the first several hundred kilometres of the Canadian Pacific Railway, and was a founding member of the Royal Society of Canada and founder of the Canadian Institute (a science organization in Toronto).
